The Tokaido Shinkansen is the main high-speed railway between Tokyo and Osaka. Trains leave from Tokyo Station and arrive at Shin-Osaka Station, where local JR, metro and onward rail connections serve central Osaka and the wider Kansai region.

Search your exact travel date before relying on a timetable or fare quoted elsewhere. The available train, seat class, price and ticket instructions can vary by departure, so 9Rail keeps those booking details attached to the selected option through checkout.

Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama: which train should you choose?

Nozomi services make the fewest stops and are normally the fastest choice between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka. Hikari trains stop more often, while Kodama services call at every station on their section of the Tokaido line. The search results show the actual departure and arrival time for each available service.

If you are travelling with a rail pass, check the current pass rules before selecting a train. Pass eligibility and any supplement are separate from a normal point-to-point ticket sold through 9Rail.

Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station

Use the Tokaido Shinkansen area at Tokyo Station and allow time to find the correct gate and platform. In Osaka, Shinkansen trains use Shin-Osaka rather than Osaka Station. Continue by local JR or Osaka Metro if your hotel is in Umeda, Namba or another central district.

Station layouts are large, so keep the final ticket instructions available and arrive early when collecting a ticket, travelling with children or carrying large luggage.

Seats, luggage and Mount Fuji views

Ordinary reserved seats are the practical choice for most travelers. Green Car offers wider seats and additional legroom. Gran Class is not offered on the Tokaido Shinkansen and is therefore not shown as a bookable class on this route.

Large baggage rules can depend on the service and the combined dimensions of the bag. Review the baggage instructions for the selected train before travel. Mount Fuji may be visible on clear days, but weather and seat allocation mean a view cannot be guaranteed.
